Who we are
Michelle leads Smart’s strategic planning and evolution in the UK, and our global commercial proposition for Platform as as Service. With more than 20 years experience as a respected and accomplished strategic leader, Michelle moved to Smart in 2018 from Legal & General Investment Management where she was leading the digital investment team. She is a member of many industry steering committees and is an award-winning fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.
Sam is the driving force behind Smart’s in-house technology and leads its growing engineering teams across multiple countries. He has enormous experience of building technology platforms that disrupt the industry, in both highly-regulated and finance-focused environments. With more than 20 years experience at the technology coal face, Sam puts the customer at the heart of everything, and has a track record of producing best-in-class technology.
Eamon ensures that Smart’s ambitions, governance and processes are optimised for efficiency. He’s a safe pair of hands to guide Smart through strategic projects as it experiences rapid global growth. He also manages our board arrangements and investor relations. Eamon joined Smart in 2018, after 35 years in a variety of senior banking roles. As COO of several banking units at Lloyds, he oversaw the creation of new business areas in mortgages, operations, risk management and financial markets.
Sue makes sure that our customers are at the heart of everything Smart does. As an accomplished director of large and complex operational systems, Sue has held senior positions including head of distribution services at Zurich Insurance. Her passion is evolving strategy and brand to build strong commercial foundations in a highly regulated industry. She also understands the importance of sharing success while building great businesses.
Richard is responsible for leading and coordinating our global growth activities, customer proposition and go-to-market planning. Richard's background and knowledge span banking, insurance and retirement. He has operated at executive and board level for over 25 years, bringing a wealth of commercial experience and an extensive global network. He specialises in transformation propositions, developing global platforms and launching technology platforms. Richard has held senior positions at Charles Schwab, Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Barclays and Aegon/Transamerica.
Paul leads the distribution and reach of Smart’s defined contribution scheme to large companies in the UK. In his former role as managing director of Aegon, Paul led the £36bn UK workplace pension business and played a key role in the transfer of global asset management. He also led their acquisition of BlackRock’s UK defined contribution pension scheme platform. Before that, Paul helped Fidelity establish a strong foothold in the UK workplace pension market.
Paul has spent 26 years working for leading workplace pension providers in the UK. He leads Smart's business development team as we evolve into more than an auto enrolment provider. Before joining Smart in 2017, Paul led business development for the government-funded NEST scheme and has lead institutional marketing and sales teams to create and distribute pension schemes. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Insurance.
Dan is responsible for leading Smart’s global savings technology platform. He joined Smart in 2016 as Head of Public Affairs and International. He later began focusing on driving Smart's overseas opportunities and relationships. Dan holds an MBA and, before joining Smart, he was a policy adviser at the Department for Business Innovation and Skills where he advised ministers on business strategy and innovation.
Tim works with our larger corporate clients, from initial proposition through to implementation. Before Smart, he helped build a leading master trust and headed up auto enrolment consulting at a FTSE 100 company. He was elected as the youngest ever Vice Chair of the Pensions Management Institute where he is a fellow and committee chair. He is also a co-founder of NextGen, which encourages young people into the finance industry.
Darren is well known for his work lobbying for change in pensions and financial services. He joined Smart in 2018 following roles in policy at The People’s Pension, Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) and at HM Treasury. He was involved in developing the architecture of the UK’s flagship auto enrolment initiative. He chairs steering committees at the PLSA and Pensions Management Institute (PMI) and is governor of the independent Pensions Policy Institute (PPI).
Kate's role is to take the technology ideas at Smart forward into production. She ensures that our design and engineering teams are running smoothly and producing high quality products for Smart’s clients and partners around the world. Before joining Smart, Kate held several different high-level roles in technology over the years, including positions at Vodafone, Allen and Overy, Morgan Stanley and Linklaters.
Martin's deep knowledge of the pensions industry makes him one of the most respected technology leaders. He heads up Smart’s product design and engineering teams to ensure that Smart continues to produce valuable and innovative products that are ahead of the rest of the market. During his career, he has produced administration platforms that manage the pensions of more than 21 million members. His passion is to create the tools to allow people to make better, informed retirement choices.
Ian oversees Smart’s regulatory affairs at a time of enormous regulatory change within the pensions industry. As the former architect of the Master Trust Assurance Framework (MAF) and guardian of industry standards in his role at The Pensions Regulator (TPR), Ian underpins and supports Smart’s evolution as a leading provider in both auto enrolment and the wider defined contribution pensions market.
Michael heads up the continuous development of Smart’s commercial operation, and the development of industry-leading solutions. He is chair of the Pensions and Savings Association (PASA) defined contributions working group. Michael is also the co-founder of NextGen, a campaign to encourage more talented young people to join the finance industry. In 2019, he was named as the pension industry’s rising star at the inaugural Rising Star Awards.
With his PHD in Cognitive Science, Harry heads up Smart’s user experience innovation team. His teams relentlessly and systematically test all member-facing digital products to ensure they comply with Smart’s high standards, but more importantly create the right outcomes, helping savers to make their money work harder. Harry’s experience spans Spotify to the award-winning Gov.uk website.
